As artistic director and choreographer of the Studio for Contemporary dance in Zagreb, Vera Maletic (Professor Emerita) created work for theater, film and television in Croatia, Austria, Germany, Sweden and England. She subsequently studied at the Laban Centre in England where she became a faculty member from 1966-1977. In addition to teaching, Maletic was also charged with the classification of Laban's manuscripts. Internationally prominent as an expert in Laban studies, she is the author of Body — Space — Expression: The development of Rudolf Laban's concepts, published by Mouton de Gruyter in 1987.
At OSU (1977-2000) Dr. Maletic introduced several new courses, including Videodance, and three courses based on Laban's framework: Labananalysis, Space Harmony, and Dance Dynamics. For the latter she published the Workbook for Dance Dynamics: Effort and Phrasing with a DVD companion that illustrates the concepts, available here.
Maletic also launched Postmodernism and realizing the dearth of resources, she initiated the first multimedia dance documentation projects. Created with a team of collaborators, two major projects were supported in part by NIPAD (the National Initiative to Preserve American Dance). The projects had a dual purpose -- to develop an accessible technology by documenting a selected artist or a work, and to provide such a prototype for the use of dance professionals.
The (1994-1996) Ohio State University Multimedia Dance Prototype (OSU-MDP) was created as a content concept and software shell that was developed while creating the CD-ROM "Victoria Uris: Choreographer and Videographer."
The (1998-2000) Dance Comprehensive Documentation Shell (dance CODES) was intended to provide a simpler technology, a database available to dance professionals free of cost; it used as its example Bebe Miller's solo Rain. An interactive DVD-ROM of the process of creating Miller's Going to the Wall
was a significant product of the project.
