John Mueller (Professor/Courtesy Appointment) received an AB from the University of Chicago and his MA and PhD in Political Science from UCLA. He was a professor of Political Science and Film Studies and dance film archivist for the University of Rochester before being selected as the first occupant of the Wayne Woodrow Hayes Chair of National Security Studies and professor of political science for The Ohio State University. Besides being a widely published and renowned authority on warfare, diplomacy and security, Mueller has also written extensively on dance, film, and musical theater, specializing in dance as an art form, dance history and film, and the choreography of Fred Astaire. He has been a dance critic, written over 50 columns for Dance Magazine, produced and directed numerous dance films, and received four grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities for his work in the dance field. Mueller has toured the world giving lectures and film showings on Fred Astaire, and was awarded the de le Torre Bueno Prize, presented by Dance Perspectives Foundation, for Astaire Dancing: The Musical Films (Knopf, 1985) as "the most distinguished book-length manuscript in the field of dance." He has recorded the commentary track for the Warner Home Video DVD of the Astaire-Rogers film, Swing Time. For his courtesy appointment in the Department of Dance he will be involved in dance archiving, producing dance DVDs (thus far, Loie Fuller's Fire Dance and Gaite Parisienne), and serving as a guest lecturer in selected classes. He also directs OSU's Dance Film Archive.
