dance minor

dance class

The dance minor is organized to merge course work in three core areas of the department. Students electing the minor will choose a minimum of two courses in each of these areas: process-oriented studies, studies in technique and physical practice, and conceptual studies, with the remainder of credit hours to be selected according to the student’s preferences. Through this integrated approach to studying the art of dance, the student completing the minor will emerge with a broad perspective of the field.

The dance minor consists of 25 credit hours of dance course work. Students must select a minimum of two distinct units of study from each of three separate strands of core course work, completing not more than five credit hours at the 100 level, and a minimum of 13 credit hours at or above the 300 level.

Core 1: Conceptual studies (10 cr hrs)
Dance 1611 (5) OR 2001 (5), and 357 (5)

Core 2: Process-oriented studies (4-6 cr hrs)
Dance 211.03 (2), 289.01 (2), 298 (3), 620 (3)

Core 3: Technique/physical practice2
(10-12 cr hrs)

Dance 201.01-201.06 (1-5), 202.01-202.03 (1-5), 203.01-203.03 (1-5), 601.01-601.08 (1-5)

1 Only one of these two overview courses may be applied to the minor.
2 The typical pattern for these courses is two or three meetings per week, yielding two credit hours per course.

Students must take either Dance 161 or Dance 200, and Dance 357 in order to complete their Core 1 requirements. The remaining credit hours are selected from core areas 2 and 3.

application procedures

Students must formally apply for minor status in the department by filing a student profile sheet. Students are obliged to maintain an updated checklist of required and elective courses toward the minor, and file the Minor Program Form with their respective college/school offices according to graduation criteria.
