undergraduate program

class

The Ohio State University BFA in Dance provides a comprehensive education across the field of contemporary dance with a core focus on the dancing experience. To that end, students are offered a solid foundation in the areas of the curriculum including: technique, performance, choreography, Laban Studies, pedagogy, history and technology during their first two years of study. Expanding upon this foundation, students are afforded the opportunity to focus on individual areas of interest supported by mentoring and interaction with faculty.

Our program encourages integration of the curricular areas, supports an interdisciplinary approach, promotes the education of the whole person, values cultural and curricular diversity, and responds to the individual needs of students, faculty, the dance field, and our broader culture. Students leave the program with the skills, perspective and imagination to be visionaries, advocates, and leaders in the field of dance and in their communities.

audition information
October 26-27, 2007 and February 15-16, 2008

Auditions for perspective students expecting to enter the undergraduate dance major program in Autumn Quarter 2008 will be held Saturday, October 27, 2007 and Saturday, February 16, 2008 in Sullivant Hall, 1813 North High street.

In order to participate in the audition, each student must submit an audition application by October 12, 2007 (Autumn audition) or February 1, 2008 (Winter audition). Late applications will not be accepted.

The audition will consist of some ballet work, short modern movement phrases that may include, African based technique, rythm, or improvisation. A prepared solo is not an audition requirement.

Major considerations in the audition are:

  1. rhythmic clarity 7. broad stylistic choices
  2. fluidity of movements 8. basic skills
  3. alignment in torso 9. kinesthetic and spatial awareness
  4. physical strength 10. familiarity with dance vocabulary
  5. use of rotation 11. skills movement phrases
  6. coordination

Through this audition, a select number of students are admitted to the program. On average, only 25-30 students (including transfers) are admitted as dance majors.

Each student must provide his/her own leotard, tights without feet, and ballet shoes.

The audition will be conducted and judged by a committee of dance faculty who, in turn, advise the department chairperson of the audition results. Letters confirming the results will be mailed to all participants within 3-4 weeks of each audition.

admission procedures

An audition is required for admission into the dance program. Students interested in majoring in dance must attend one or two auditions that will take place in the Autumn and Winter quarters. While the application deadline for transfer students extends to June 2, 2008, transfer applicants must attend one of the two auditions listed below for consideration.

The BFA program in Dance follows a course curriculum that begins in the Autumn quarter of each academic year. For this reason, students, including transfers, can only be admitted into the program for Autumn quarter. The university deadline for Autumn 2008 admission into OSU is February 1, 2008 for prospective freshman. Because Autumn admission is the most competetive, students interested in majoring in dance should apply to the University as early as possible so that we may be notified of your admissions status in a timely fashion.
