Add to Calendar 2016-02-19 15:00:00 2016-02-19 16:00:00 ARTHUR MITCHELL TO SPEAK AT OSU DANCE The Ohio State University Department of Dance and The Ohio Arts Council proudly co-sponsor a lecture with Arthur Mitchell on Friday Feb 19th at 3 pm in the Barnett Theatre in Sullivant Hall, 1813 N High St.  An inspirational speaker, Mitchell will share stories from his remarkable life as a pioneering leader in American dance.  A renowned performer and choreographer, Mitchell was the first African American principal dancer with New York City Ballet under George Balanchine.  He is better known as the founder and Artistic Director of Dance Theatre of Harlem, the first permanently established African American ballet company in America.  Open to the public, OSU Dance, the Ohio Arts Council and The Barnett Center for Integrated Arts and Enterprise are pleased to share the opportunity to meet this living legacy.  Mitchell has been recognized as a MacArthur Fellow, inducted into the National Museum of Dance Hall of Fame, and has received the United States National Medal of Arts and a Fletcher Foundation fellowship.Mitchell’s objective is to promote a wider range of interest and participation in classical ballet across the country, especially among underserved communities.  All community collaborators, particularly China White, are excited to establish Columbus as the mid-western destination for his annual scouting of talented dancers.  China White is a former ballerina with Dance Theatre of Harlem, owner and Artistic Director of Theatre Street Dance Academy, educator of the Pre-Professional Dance Program at Fort Hayes and an OSU Dance master’s alum.Community partners Fort Hayes Metropolitan Education Center and Theatre Street Dance Academy will host a series of auditions on the Fort Hayes campus.  Send an email to TSDA.Arthurmitchell.audition@gmail.com to request pre-audition requirements and deadlines.  Columbus auditions will take place on Thursday February 18th at 3 pm for ages 11 – 13 and Friday Feb. 19th from 4:30 – 5:15 for ages 14 – 17 and at 6 pm for ages 18 -24.  Auditions are open to dancers from Cincinnati, Dayton, Cleveland, and surrounding Ohio regions.  Mitchell is also slated to hold auditions in Buffalo, New York, and Miami, Florida this year.  Barnett Theatre Sullivant Hall, 1813 North High Street Department of Dance dance@osu.edu America/New_York public
