DEPARTMENT OF DANCE POSITION OPENING

The Department of Dance at The Ohio State University seeks a dance professional who is actively engaged in a combination of physical practice, creative activity, and theoretical inquiry. We welcome an artist/teacher working in Africanist traditions who brings 21st century approaches and interdisciplinary perspectives. We value an individual who will continue their relationships with the professional field nationally and internationally, as well as with the local community. We expect additional contributions in core choreography courses and other areas, creating an effective webbing of movement practice, theory, and creative activity, and advancing the department’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.

 

Our new colleague will contribute:

In Teaching: a rigorous physical practice rooted in Africanist cultural aesthetics and at least one of the following additional curricular areas: dance composition, improvisation, somatic techniques, pedagogy, creative technologies for dance at all levels of the BFA and MFA programs

In Research: developing choreographies for the stage or other spaces, exploring collaborative and interdisciplinary processes, and examining theoretical underpinnings of contemporary dance practices

In Service: leadership in undergraduate and graduate programs, curriculum development, advising, experience mentoring members of underrepresented groups and governance within the department, college, university, and the field at large

 

About the Department

The Department of Dance at The Ohio State University consistently ranks as one of the top programs in the country. We provide intersecting investigations in the field of dance, with courses in varied movement and choreographic practices, repertory, dance history, production and lighting, dance pedagogy, cultural studies, dance related technologies, dance documentation, theory and analysis. We view the breadth of our program as an academic setting that values diverse perspectives and prioritizes educating students in a comprehensive way within the lively discourse of a major research university.

Our department is staffed by 12 tenure-track faculty, adjunct educators, international guest artists, visiting scholars, and 20 graduate associates. We serve 100 undergraduates in the BFA program, 30 graduate students in MFA or PhD programs, 200 dance minors, and 500 students each semester in the non-major program. Our newly renovated facilities in historic Sullivant Hall feature state-of-the-art, flexible performance spaces, six studios, a motion capture lab, classrooms, a costume shop, and a media lab. Neighbors within the building include the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library, The Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD), and the Department of Arts Administration, Education and Policy. Situated at the gateway of the university’s campus, this new vantage provides an expansive view of the university’s evolving Arts District, which includes Mershon Auditorium and the Wexner Center for the Arts.

 

Position: Assistant Professor, Full-time, tenure track

Qualifications: MFA required, professional experience as an artist, teacher and choreographer required. Appointment is contingent on the university’s verification of credentials and other information required by law and/or university policies, including but not limited to a criminal background check.

Salary: Commensurate with experience
