Taking chances, experimentation, and raw talent describes this year's 2008 graduating senior dance majors. The Ohio State University dance majors, trained at one of the top dance departments in the nation, will be hosting its annual senior concert, Jumping Off Point. Charged with aggressive movement, global influences, individual preferences, and feel-good motives, this is a show not to be missed! The constant presence and integrity of this graduating class echoes through the theatre, and reflects the audience’s interpretation of dance as multiple meanings. Jumping Off Point will take place in Sullivant Hall Theatre on May 21st, 22nd, and 23rd. Expansive influences of various techniques and styles include modern dance, tap, jazz, ballet, and video technology. The show starts at 8pm, and is ten dollars general admission, five dollars for students with ID and senior citizens. Dance is a genre to crave; curiosity never had a higher hill to seek. Jumping Off Point confronts and examines oral landscaping, revisits bodily motion, and brings the Columbus art scene right to the front door. Kristina Isabelle, an innovative choreographer based in Columbus, has choreographed a provocative piece with five of the female graduates. Five strong women slyly question identity, while challenging perceptions of the everyday routine. Coco Loupe, an M.F.A graduate of the Ohio State University Department of Dance, and former Assistant Professor of Dance at The University of Oregon, has choreographed two pieces for Jumping Off Point. Co-founder of GroundLevel Dance Company, and former performer with NY based Skip Costa/CORE Movement Research, Loupe has thoroughly tested her dancers’ limits, revealing visionary movement qualities and sound improvisational techniques. Other guest choreographers include Slam, who teaches at Broadway Dance Center in New York City, Adriana Durant and Jenai Cutcher, current M.F.A. candidates in the dance department, and Shani Collins, of the renowned Ronald K. Brown/Evidence Dance Company.
The use of media and evolving technology collects momentum, and promises a night full of action, surprises, bold statements, suspense, and energetic compositions; reflecting the hard work of anticipating graduates.
Jumping Off Point…we go higher than you think.
