This course introduces students to theoretical, historiographical, and methodological issues. In addition, this course examines themes central to the field of dance ethnology, while reading and conducting ethnographic research in areas of dance and performance (including feminist and post-colonial approaches to Western, non-Western, and globalized forms). This course questions the power dynamics that have shaped ‘global dance’, as we encounter opportunities to question our own subject positions as dancers, scholars, and social beings.
