The Department of Dance is pleased to announce that Assistant Professor Alfonso Abrahm Cervera will present his solo work RP at the Cleveland Dance Festival on Friday, November 8, 2025.
RP is an original choreographic work that explores the intersections of identity, memory, and queer embodiment through movement. Drawing from his ongoing Poc-Chuc research, Professor Cervera merges Mexican Ballet Folklorico, Afro-Latine, and contemporary dance vocabularies to reflect on the complexities of belonging and cultural hybridity. Retinitis pigmentosa, is a rare, inherited degenerative eye disease that causes severe vision impairment, often beginning in early childhood. Cervera's work places his family at the forefront as he archives and revisits shared moments with Maria Casanova and Denise Cervera's lived experiences. Through movement-based explorations, Cervera attempts to acknowledge past events and bring awareness to his family's disability.
The Cleveland Dance Festival is dedicated to celebrating innovative and diverse voices in dance. Professor Cervera’s inclusion in this year’s program highlights his continued leadership in expanding choreographic dialogues surrounding cultural representation and queer futurism in performance.
