The Ohio State Summer Dance Intensive is a two-week immersive dance experience. The Ohio State University Department of Dance is offering a daytime non-residential dance intensive and Archiving Black Performance Summer Program for rising high school students who are entering 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grades next autumn. The first week of intensive will include five days of classes in movement practice, repertory and choreography, with additional sessions about dance in college. The second week will include morning technique classes and then a focused repertory experience for either Archiving Black Performance or with Eddie Taketa. Week two is designed for students wanting a deeper dive into dance and repertory experiences. Priority for enrollment in week two will be given to dancers who have enrolled in week one as well.

During the Week 1 Summer Dance Intensive students will:

  • take one contemporary and one African movement practice class, one choreography class, and one repertory class each day;
  • discover many ways to continue dancing in college;
  • connect with current college dance students;
  • tour the campus and learn about its many resources;
  • prepare a sharing and showing about the intensive on Friday at 4 p.m.

All classes will be taught by current Department of Dance faculty, with six Ohio State Dance majors serving as student leaders.

Summer Dance Intensive Director: Dr. Nyama McCarthy-Brown

Week 1 will include the following faculty instructors:

All students will be considered, but priority will be given to intermediate and advanced dancers aspiring to study dance in college.

The Week 2 Summer Dance Intensive students will have a choice between two options. All students have morning technique classes together, and then divide into two groups with more focused repertory/dance making experiences.

Option A:

Archiving Black Performance Summer Program is part of the collaborative project Archiving Black Performance: Memory, Embodiment, and Stages of Being, which establishes a vision for the transmission of identity and race through the embodiment of dance repertory acquisition of internationally acclaimed black women dance performers. The project team aims to elevate, via performance, oral history, archival research, summer workshops, digital preservation and communication methods, and publication, historic dances of black women performers as represented through black lives and black bodies. The focus is on solo, duet, and small group works staged, performed, or choreographed by/for black women early in the creation process.

Archiving Black Performance Directors:Crystal Michelle Perkins and Dr. Valarie Williams

Option B:

Students will take part in an immersive dance making experience led by Eddie Taketa.
