Where memory becomes possibility, new ways of moving take form. "Emergent Precipice," the Department of Dance Autumn Faculty Concert, features three distinct contemporary dance works created by Alfonso Cervera, Jr., Donald Isom and Eddie Taketa. Together, the works bring vibrant movement, rich rhythm and resonant storytelling to the stage. Mexican Folklórico, Latin American social dance, Krump, Hip Hop and House meet expansive contemporary dance practices shaped by experimentation, physicality, improvisation and choreographic invention. Moving between cultural memory and contemporary expression, "Emergent Precipice" invites audiences to meet these artists at the edge of transformation through rhythm, spatial play, tension, release and embodied storytelling.
About the works:
Ritmo, by Alfonso Cervera
Title: Ritmo
Choreographer: Alfonso Cervera
Dancers: Hope Bodley, Aidan Branham, Lily Dramble, Caroline Dunn-Helton, Hailey Eversole, Livi Gisondo, Xander Goertzen, Gianna Handlen, Lauren Jimenez, Elizabeth McLaughlin, Jenna Naik, Hattie Plinke, Khamille Randall, Kaedyn Rayl, Katie Sabatino, Maddy Shindle, Isabel Silverman, Fiona Swift, Ava Torok, Yinqui Wang, Jayna Zeltner
Notes on the piece: Inspired by Cervera’s Poc-Chuc practice, which is a technique, methodology, and choreographic approach that blends Mexican Folklórico, Latin American social dance forms, and movement practices from the Western concert dance canon. "Ritmo" experiments with rhythmic structures found within Mexican Folklórico, spatial configurations, and the tension of holding vibration in the space. The work asks how these elements can be reimagined to create new meaning, collective commitment, and nostalgic references while still holding onto the aesthetics, rhythms, and forms from which they emerge.
