BFA Senior Concert: What Remains
BFA students present their capstone projects, which paint an engaging and captivating picture of their experiences and time at Ohio State. Scarlet Show (Thursday and Saturday night) Mi Esencia (My Essence) by Larissa RojasA celebration of identity, culture, and community, bringing to life the rich traditions and emotional depth of my raising. Seed (solo) explores identity and passion reflecting the dancer’s journey from home. Root (duet) honors family’s unconditional support fostering artistic growth. Blooming (ensemble) a joyful celebration or tradition, community and triumph.Twice as Many Flowers, by Valeria KozakUtilizing a collection of different compositional approaches, this piece celebrates self-discovery and living in acceptance of the unknown. Through an intimate environment, the cast navigates freedom in individuality while shedding the narrative of “fitting in”.RESPLANDOR, by Gabriela Brito“RESPLANDOR” explores the idea of identity and how it shifts due to location. Inspired by my Dominican roots and childhood experiences, this piece is a melting pot of styles including salsa, bachata and contemporary dance.Confidant, by Huimin Tang "Confidant" through solo and duet choreography, is dedicated to those who find themselves in the abyss of extreme despair. Believe that no matter when or where, even if the whole world stands against you, there will always be someone who understands you. believes in you, supports you and will catch you.The Thread Between Us, by Josie FarleyThis piece explores the strength of generational bonds, specifically between women. I am grateful to Janis Farley and June Smith, whose influence and words have deeply shaped me, and have added a heartfelt touch to this work.The Modification, by Alaina Craig in collaboration with dancers“The Modification” explores how injured dancers adapt their movement while maintaining artistic expression. It highlights the resilience and creativity required to modify choreography, demonstrating that movement can still be powerful and expressive despite physical limitations through structured improvisation.The Movement Cure, by Sofia ZwerdlingBallet contemporary fusion incorporated with a dancers personalized mental and physical health challenges. Connects dance with feelings of burnout, depression and anxiety with focus on individual therapeutic strength and endurance.Meeting the Master, by Mia Curran in collaboration with the dancersThe spiritual journey of a group of devoted followers as they navigate their belief in their leader. This fervent love they share drives them eventually into a collective state of hysteria and madness.Gray Show (Friday night and Saturday matinee)Cherished Echoes, by Sidney HopkinsThis piece displays how there are lessons to be learned, growth to be shared, and beauty to be found in the mess of breaking. My sound includes real audio from my family and loved ones over the years, as this dance plays tribute to the people who have helped shape my lifeEchoes of Empowerment: A Performative Archive of Black Women, by Destiny ThomasA performative archive of Black Women in History that explores dance as a vital expression of Black identity, resilience, and activism, analyzing its historical evolution, cultural significance, and impact and influence on me as a black woman.Whining Around The Gaze, by Latifat SulaimonThis piece highlights West African dance styles (Naija Street, Azonto, Ndombolo and more) blending cultural storytelling, heritage, and musicality while addressing the negative Western gaze on Africa’s diverse expressions and identity.HerStory, by Sydney LigonThis project explores how African American women use dance to challenge European beauty standards, embrace self-love, and express cultural identity. Through storytelling, we examined the portrayal of Black women’s experiences told specifically by Black women, asking the question, “What makes Black women tired?” During rehearsals, my all-Black female cast shared personal narratives, reflecting on self-image and womanhood in the U.S.The Rhythm in Healing, by Evelyn Couch“The Rhythm in Healing” is a self-choreographed tap solo that explores how tap dance serves as my own personal therapy, blending movement and emotion to create a powerful journey of healing and self expression.Shifting bodies, changing minds, by Mariana BaisThrough a choreographic setting, I was looking into how throughout the years, how not only my dancing, but also my everyday life has changed through different achievements and challenges. Through that I wanted my other dancer to not only embody my experience, but also think about their own experiences too.Perfectionist, by Taylor McgoffThis project explores the impact of rigorous ballet training during early dance development, examining its advantages and challenges, including confidence, performance issues, and perfectionist tendencies. BFA students present their capstone projects, which paint an engaging and captivating picture of their experiences and time at Ohio State. Scarlet Show (Thursday and Saturday night) Mi Esencia (My Essence) by Larissa RojasA celebration of identity, culture, and community, bringing to life the rich traditions and emotional depth of my raising. Seed (solo) explores identity and passion reflecting the dancer’s journey from home. Root (duet) honors family’s unconditional support fostering artistic growth. Blooming (ensemble) a joyful celebration or tradition, community and triumph.Twice as Many Flowers, by Valeria KozakUtilizing a collection of different compositional approaches, this piece celebrates self-discovery and living in acceptance of the unknown. Through an intimate environment, the cast navigates freedom in individuality while shedding the narrative of “fitting in”.RESPLANDOR, by Gabriela Brito“RESPLANDOR” explores the idea of identity and how it shifts due to location. Inspired by my Dominican roots and childhood experiences, this piece is a melting pot of styles including salsa, bachata and contemporary dance.Confidant, by Huimin Tang "Confidant" through solo and duet choreography, is dedicated to those who find themselves in the abyss of extreme despair. Believe that no matter when or where, even if the whole world stands against you, there will always be someone who understands you. believes in you, supports you and will catch you.The Thread Between Us, by Josie FarleyThis piece explores the strength of generational bonds, specifically between women. I am grateful to Janis Farley and June Smith, whose influence and words have deeply shaped me, and have added a heartfelt touch to this work.The Modification, by Alaina Craig in collaboration with dancers“The Modification” explores how injured dancers adapt their movement while maintaining artistic expression. It highlights the resilience and creativity required to modify choreography, demonstrating that movement can still be powerful and expressive despite physical limitations through structured improvisation.The Movement Cure, by Sofia ZwerdlingBallet contemporary fusion incorporated with a dancers personalized mental and physical health challenges. Connects dance with feelings of burnout, depression and anxiety with focus on individual therapeutic strength and endurance.Meeting the Master, by Mia Curran in collaboration with the dancersThe spiritual journey of a group of devoted followers as they navigate their belief in their leader. This fervent love they share drives them eventually into a collective state of hysteria and madness.Gray Show (Friday night and Saturday matinee)Cherished Echoes, by Sidney HopkinsThis piece displays how there are lessons to be learned, growth to be shared, and beauty to be found in the mess of breaking. My sound includes real audio from my family and loved ones over the years, as this dance plays tribute to the people who have helped shape my lifeEchoes of Empowerment: A Performative Archive of Black Women, by Destiny ThomasA performative archive of Black Women in History that explores dance as a vital expression of Black identity, resilience, and activism, analyzing its historical evolution, cultural significance, and impact and influence on me as a black woman.Whining Around The Gaze, by Latifat SulaimonThis piece highlights West African dance styles (Naija Street, Azonto, Ndombolo and more) blending cultural storytelling, heritage, and musicality while addressing the negative Western gaze on Africa’s diverse expressions and identity.HerStory, by Sydney LigonThis project explores how African American women use dance to challenge European beauty standards, embrace self-love, and express cultural identity. Through storytelling, we examined the portrayal of Black women’s experiences told specifically by Black women, asking the question, “What makes Black women tired?” During rehearsals, my all-Black female cast shared personal narratives, reflecting on self-image and womanhood in the U.S.The Rhythm in Healing, by Evelyn Couch“The Rhythm in Healing” is a self-choreographed tap solo that explores how tap dance serves as my own personal therapy, blending movement and emotion to create a powerful journey of healing and self expression.Shifting bodies, changing minds, by Mariana BaisThrough a choreographic setting, I was looking into how throughout the years, how not only my dancing, but also my everyday life has changed through different achievements and challenges. Through that I wanted my other dancer to not only embody my experience, but also think about their own experiences too.Perfectionist, by Taylor McgoffThis project explores the impact of rigorous ballet training during early dance development, examining its advantages and challenges, including confidence, performance issues, and perfectionist tendencies.
