By Quianna Simpson As African dance has survived in America, it has continued to generate reconnection for African Americans with culture, identity and ancestral legacies. Soukeyna JOY! brings forward the history of Rites of Passage rituals in African American and African culture. As the initiation begins, bear witness to the sacred and vital task of transferring indelible knowledge from mentor to mentee or Mendiani to Mendiani. Sharing the cultures of both West African and African Americans, the initiates are coined with this name. A name given to young girls going through this sacred ritual and can only be mentored by previous Mendiani, who now offer guidance on the difficult journey of being a Black woman in America.  As African dance and the African American experience are blended into a colorful journey of transformation, not only witness but participate in the ceremonial celebration and affirm their passage as it is the key to the pride, they carry for themselves and their ancestors.  TICKETS:  Barnett Theatre General admission tickets for the MFA Concert performances of W)gb3j3k3, we carry to depart and Soukeyna JOY! in the Barnett Theatre are $5 and may be purchased by calling the Ohio State Theatre Ticket Office at (614) 292-2295, online at Ticketmaster.com, or in-person at the Ohio State Theatre Ticket Office, 1849 Cannon Dr., Columbus, OH 43210. By Yukina Sato

This performance looks inward and asks what we carry with our bodies. Spatial and geographical kinesphere shapes one's physicality. When we move to a different space, our physicality adapts to the new space and creates another layer of memory beneath our skin. We depart from our present bodies, living archives of the human condition, to a future full of changes and encounters.
