Yujie Chen is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Dance. She is a practitioner and educator of Chinese classical dance, Chinese ethnic and folk dance, and Taiji martial arts. Her research focuses on dance practices in China and diaspora-homeland interactions, with additional interests in gender and sexuality, popular culture, and dance film and digital performance. Her peer-reviewed articles have appeared in Dance Chronicle, the Journal of Beijing Dance Academy, and more. She received the 2025 Selma Jeanne Cohen Award from the Dance Studies Association. Also a dance filmmaker and multimedia artist, she was a commissioned artist with the Young Artist Platform (YAP) of the China Dancers Association. Her dance film has been screened internationally and received the Award for Best Picture in the Dance Video Unit at the 2023 Beijing International Film Festival. She is the co-founder of YY Dance+Media, and her collaborative multimedia work has been shown in dance festivals in Columbus, Detroit, Kalamazoo, Beijing, etc. She is an Associate Professor at Southwest University in China (on leave) and was a visiting scholar at the University of Florida.
